Namepros wants threads to stay on topic

Yesterday was a long day on Namepros, a ton of posts and a ton of posts mods had to delete. As someone who modded for 12 years it makes for a long day and gets a lot of people upset.

I have said for years, some are just coming to do battle, they do not believe in what the other poster is posting about and they will change tactics and come back in a slightly different passive – aggressive way.

Some thread starters bring this out as they are only starting a thread to bring attention to themselves, with one little detail left out. PROOF!

Paul Buonopane and several other mods went back and forth to the wee hours of the morning answering questions, deleting posts and issuing infractions against members.

Namepros wants to be clear they want on-topic posting and they define it:

At NamePros, we have strictly defined “on topic” in this rule:

  • Rule 1.15. Organization. All content must be organized in an appropriate section (“forum”). Posts and messages must be on topic and relevant where submitted (e.g., a discussion thread or direct message).
    • Note: The topic is decided by the title and the first post/message; subsequent posts (even by the topic’s creator) do not change the topic. If a topic’s creator changes the title or first post/message within the edit time limits, then previous posts/messages will be unaffected and the new topic will apply moving forward only.

Now I asked about people starting “Look at me” posts with no substance and the mods let me know about a new rule,

Not too long ago, we did add a rule that prohibits threads from being created solely for that purpose:

  • Rule 2.6. Do not create a thread solely for the purpose of reporting a sale unless at least the item’s full name (e.g., domain name or business name) and exact sale price are shared within it. The exception to this rule is showcase threads where everyone can share partial details about their sales (e.g., “the name starts with insurance and sold for $XX,XXX”) in the same thread (not limited to 1 showcase thread but rule 1.13 applies).

Of course, it’s possible for threads to be created that get around this rule, but it has helped.

Hopefully this starts getting smoother because you cannot continue to have days like yesterday. People are just going to say, “I’m done with this!”

Sporters.com sells for just 15% of the price 4 year ago

Back in 2015 Frank Schilling’s Name Administration sold Sporters.com for $20,000. The new owners stayed under privacy and don’t look to have even changed the nameservers. They let the $20,000 investment drop and it got scooped up at DropCatch, closing at $3,053. The domain was registered in March of 2004. Sporter.com is a huge website […]

Is .com still the number 1 extension?

So a gentleman name Kyle Byers published a post and a Reddit thread that took a look at .com vs other tlds.

The Reddit thread has 138 comments and it’s interesting because this is mostly people, (maybe entirely) outside of the domain industry.

The post opens up with:

How important is having a .com URL?

Everyone has an opinion, but as far as I know there’s never been a good study comparing domain extensions’ performance.

Until now 😄.

I ran an experiment with 1,500 people to find out how they would react to eight popular domain extensions (top-level domains): .com, .net, .org, .biz, .us, .co, .blog, and .io.

Read on for the full results — they might surprise you.

Trust was an interesting segment:

Someone needs to stop Roy Flanders’ domain names from expiring

Hopefully Enom or someone else can step up but the domains of a domain investor who passed away are expiring and it needs to stop. Ron Jackson wrote about Roy Flanders back in December of 2016. sadly Roy passed away. I did not know the man personally but for those that did he seemed to […]

What are you hoping to acquire with $500?

The topic I am curious about, the buyers (wherever they are) looking for 1 word .coms, generic, descriptive not made-up or anything like that. What kind of names are you hoping to acquire with a $500 budget?

This is a serious question, are the hopes for very obscure, not well known, one word names that would have little commercial value like Floccinauccinihilipilification? It’s one word and has an interesting meaning that fits in with the search for any one word .com so long as it’s a dictionary word.

The meaning of the word:

This word is 30 characters long. Despite its use of flocci, the plural of floccus and which means tufts of wooly hair or small, rounded tufts of clouds, the whole word is not a scientific term. Floccinauccinihilipilification means trifling, of little or no value or something that has been estimated to be valueless.

Daily Domain Picks 5-19-19

Aroom.com was the high sale on Saturday at $3,860. OurTime.org is an interesting one, the .com is a dating site for people 50 and over. The .org was a non profit, from Wikipedia:

Our Time (corporately styled OurTime.org) is an American organization founded by Matthew Segal and Jarrett Moreno, focused on organizing campaigns that register and educate voters, advocating for economic opportunity, and covering political news aimed at young Americans.

The organization absorbed Declare Yourself and the Student Association for Voter Empowerment, and began operations as a 501(c)(3) in March 2011. The organization says that its positions are based upon its assessment of majority views of the millennial generation.
